Be sure to pose these questions during your next job interview:

  • How has this role evolved over time? The last thing you want to do is take a dead-end job. If their response is a detailed explanation of all the ways the position has progressed throughout the years, it’s probably safe to assume it’s a place where you can learn and grow. However, if their answer is vague and they seem taken aback by your question, you may want to steer clear.
  • What is the company culture like? From the outside it may seem like a small issue, but company culture is actually a huge deal. If you have a hard time fitting in with your new colleagues and work environment, you’ll be back to the job search in no time at all. For added information, take note of little things such as whether the office has an open or closed layout and if employees see happy or stressed out.
  • What are your expectations for the position? It’s beyond frustrating to accept a job and quickly realize it has no defined direction. The best managers have big plans for their team, so they know exactly what they need from each person. Take it as a great sign if they’ve already created a 30-60-90 day plan of what you’ll be expected to accomplish during your first few months on the job. Think twice if they don’t really seem to know what will be on your agenda.
  • Why did the last person leave the job? This response can be telling in many ways. If the person who previously held the job was promoted, you’ll know the company is a place you can grow your career. Likewise, if the hiring manager seems hesitant to answer this question or mentions that many people haven’t lasted long in the position, take this as a red flag that you should probably move on to your next option.
  • What do you enjoy most about working here? You’ll probably catch the interviewer off-guard with this one — and that’s a good thing. If they don’t miss a beat rambling on and on about the benefits of working for the company, you can be confident it really is a great place to work. Of course, if they seem to have trouble coming up with a response, this is also very telling.
